Seas: 5-7 feet
Winds: 15-20 SE
Temp: 74 F
Viz: 30-35 feet
I decided to make an overnight trip this weekend and take a Monday off for the heck of it. I was hoping to be able to get into some snapper since the forecast had the weekend winds dying down (and hopefully the seas as well). Unfortunately, as you might have noticed from the stats above, neither of those things happened. The viz was awesome, but you had to weather some serious seas to fish it.

Sunday we tried to avoid the seas and stayed closer to home. We ran into large numbers of small fish. I passed by dozens of legal (but small) hogs and mangroves hoping to run into the big ones around the next corner, but to no avail. By the time we got to a spot with any fish of any considerable size, the tide had switched and switched hard! So hard in fact the anchor was pulled loose and we had to make way to the boat because of it. I ended up with 1 decent snapper and nothing else to show for my efforts. I was being picky, but it sure was frustrating to end up with such a small catch after so much work.

Monday was unfortunately more of the same with rough seas and high winds but this time we decided to head offshore anyway. We got tossed around like well, I guess like a boat on the high seas :). We were dealing with 5-7 foot waves with occasional 8 foot rogues. With only two of us on the boat it made for some difficult diving. Between the high seas and low sun (we went out early), it was difficult to spot a single head on the surface of the water. We persevered, but only ended up with a slightly larger catch to show for our efforts. This wasn't the day to try and spot new locations and after our 4th gps location, we decided we had given it the old college try and had had enough. The ride home was so rough it was hard to get my beer in my mouth (but somehow I managed). As you might have already noticed or guessed, the catch wasn't exactly picture worthy this weekend, so hopefully I will have the first batch of pictures for the site the next time we head out. Either way, it was still better than being at work!
